Finding shed antlers is an old trophy hunter’s trick; it sometimes reveals the existence of a really big buck that survived the winter and may not have been discovered. Winter or spring shedding areas may not be the same as the deer’s core area, but the animal probably won’t be far away.

Shed hunting can also provide serious coin for a successful hunter, even on a one- or two-day excursion. One Arizona guide made an extra $500 picking up elk antlers during a fall archery hunt; these were large antlers that are easier to find in the spring.
