Those who have kept up with the news have been hearing for some time now that the sky is falling on the whitetail world, and recent assessments and predictions paint a far more dire picture than ever before. But just when it seems all is lost, a dim ray of hope breaks through the clouds.

Despite common perceptions, suppressors are perfectly legal to own unless you live in the 11 states of California, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The other 39 states allow the legal ownership of suppressors and 30 states allow their use for hunting game animals.

Sheep hunting here in Alaska has been an annual tradition for me for the past 9 years, and it’s been quite a learning experience. Every year I find a new piece of gear or method that helps me hunt harder, longer, and more efficiently. However, I’ve whittled down a massive list to 10 of what I consider to be my most important gear items for a backpack hunt for sheep or goats here in Alaska, or for Elk, mule deer or other mountain game in the lower 48.

Now for the first time I was going to hit two states to continue bowhunting. My plan was to go to Missouri alone for a week and then meet up with good friend Bryan for what would be his and my first ever bowhunt in Kansas. To say I was geeked would be an understatement. By John Eberhart In 1975 I began working at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare Michigan. At the time compounds bows were just hitting the market and I bought a 50 to 60 pound Bear Polar II which had 6 wheels, a 50% let-off, and was a sloth in speed compared to bows in today’s marketplace. Back then on average in Michigan according to the DNR, only 2% of licensed bowhunter’s took an antlered buck (3 inch spikes or better) with a bow and 7% took a deer with a bow. Nowadays nearly 30% take bucks with a bow and around 40% take a deer every year. Just taking a deer with a string and stick was a big deal then and just about anyone you asked for permission would say, knock yourself out. This move several years ago was stemmed from unhappy hunters who said that deer populations had dropped. This year’s deer season will close statewide on Jan. 13. The only exception is the suburban Atlanta archery-only counties that are open to bowhunting until Jan. 31. The map shows the days when hunters can shoot antlerless deer with a firearm. Antlerless deer may be taken statewide with archery equipment from Sept. 8 to Jan. 13. Also included are dates for turkey, bear, migratory birds and small-game.
