A CURE FOR CWD?

Bob Humphrey Most deer hunters are at least aware of CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease), and many are familiar with the potential threat it holds to deer populations. Those who have kept up with the news have been hearing for some time now that the sky is falling on the whitetail world, and recent assessments and predictions paint a far more dire picture than ever before. But just when it seems all is lost, a dim ray of hope breaks through the clouds.

EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT FIREARM SUPPRESSORS

Rod Pinkston | Originally published in  GameKeepers: Farming for Wildlife Magazine Alabama became the most recent state to legalize the use of firearm suppressors (or gun silencers) for hunting in October 2014. Despite common perceptions, suppressors are perfectly legal to own unless you live in the 11 states of California, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The other 39 states allow the legal ownership of suppressors and 30 states allow their use for hunting game animals.

5 Things Clients Expect From Their Hunting Guides

Hunting guides are expected to provide these 5 things  July 20, 2017 It has become apparent to me over the years of hunting with a wide range of Outfitters that it’s inevitable, all clients are going to leave camp with a different level of satisfaction. Some clients will leave happy, regardless if they’ve harvested an animal or not, and others will be going home with a bitter taste in their mouths; sometimes unsatisfied no matter how hard the guide worked to get the hunter an opportunity.

To protect yourself from the elements and enhance your hunting experience, there are a few out-of-the-ordinary tools that belong in your gear pack. A Hunting Checklist for Beginners

Whether you’re 15 or 50, there’s nothing more exciting than the anticipation of your first hunt. Making sure you’re prepared is a major key in calling the day a total success. Naturally, there are obvious items like your license, but what if your first hunt suddenly turns into your first kill? Will you have what you need? Here’s a hunting checklist of things you should consider before you hit the woods “officially” for the first time. Before your hunt, you’ll first want to check all the hunting regulations of the area you’re heading to. Whether that’s close to home, or in another state, you’ll need all the rules and regulations. Some rules can include the amount of orange you need to wear, how close you can hunt to homes or roads and what areas are legal or illegal to hunt. Also, while you’re preparing for your hunt, purchase your hunting license, sight in the gun or bow you’ll use, and get any landowner permission necessary in the area you want to hunt. This information, and mo

10 Essentials for a Backpack Hunt

Sheep hunting here in Alaska has been an annual tradition for me for the past 9 years, and it’s been quite a learning experience. Every year I find a new piece of gear or method that helps me hunt harder, longer, and more efficiently. However, I’ve whittled down a massive list to 10 of what I consider to be my most important gear items for a backpack hunt for sheep or goats here in Alaska, or for Elk, mule deer or other mountain game in the lower 48.

Hunters' gear list

Wise hunters wear high visibility gear This basic gear list is a great start when planning a hunting trip.  Pack and sleeping Pack & pack liner Tent or tent fly and ground sheet Bed roll or inflatable mattress Sleeping bag Clothing 2 x wool or polypropylene tops 2 x wool or polypropylene long johns 2 x pair shorts 2 x pair of socks 2 x pair of underpants Warm jersey Waterproof jacket Sturdy boots Gaiters Warm hat Gloves Over trousers Spare camp footwear What colour to wear? It is recommended that hunters should wear clothing that contrasts with the environment they are hunting in, as there is no evidence that suggests deer can or cannot see any one colour better than another (New Zealand Police, 2003). Deer will spot a hunters movement rather than the colour of their clothing. JOHN EBERHART’S MEGA KANSAS SIX POINTER

By John Eberhart 2004 had been a very good year in Michigan as I’d taken an eight point on public land from the ground and then took a huge ten point just prior to the gun season. Now for the first time I was going to hit two states to continue bowhunting. My plan was to go to Missouri alone for a week and then meet up with good friend Bryan for what would be his and my first ever bowhunt in Kansas. To say I was geeked would be an understatement. I took a monster ten point in Missouri on a 40 acre parcel I had just received permission on and that hunt would be the most gut wrenching week of hunting I’d ever encountered due to the steady rain all week. The Hunt Begins It was the last week in November when I met up with Bryan in Kansas. We spent the first full day scouting and preparing locations on the original property I had acquired permission on and the next day and a half hunting them with not only no success, but also few deer sightings. The property owner and his friend

EBERHART’S ’76 FREELANCE 10 POINTER

By John Eberhart In 1975 I began working at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare Michigan. At the time compounds bows were just hitting the market and I bought a 50 to 60 pound Bear Polar II which had 6 wheels, a 50% let-off, and was a sloth in speed compared to bows in today’s marketplace. Back then on average in Michigan according to the DNR, only 2% of licensed bowhunter’s took an antlered buck (3 inch spikes or better) with a bow and 7% took a deer with a bow. Nowadays nearly 30% take bucks with a bow and around 40% take a deer every year. Just taking a deer with a string and stick was a big deal then and just about anyone you asked for permission would say, knock yourself out. The Context I had been bowhunting since the mid 60’s with a recurve and cedar arrows and had planted a lot of cedar trees (misses where I couldn’t find the cedar arrow) since most of my early hunting was from the ground and missed arrows slid through the weeds. Hunting from trees back then wasn’t legal for a

2018-2019 Guide To GA Hunting Season Dates

BY  CHAD CAIN   ON  JULY 2, 2018 Once again, many Georgia counties will experience at least a few days of deer season when only bucks are legal to shoot during firearms season. This move several years ago was stemmed from unhappy hunters who said that deer populations had dropped. This year’s deer season will close statewide on Jan. 13. The only exception is the suburban Atlanta archery-only counties that are open to bowhunting until Jan. 31. The map shows the days when hunters can shoot antlerless deer with a firearm. Antlerless deer may be taken statewide with archery equipment from Sept. 8 to Jan. 13. Also included are dates for turkey, bear, migratory birds and small-game. The complete 2018-19 Georgia Hunting Season Dates and Bag Limits booklet will soon be available at license vendors and online. Be sure to consult the official regs before heading afield. Hunters are responsible for knowing and abiding by seasons and limits or be subject to charges and fines.
